Frankincense (Boswellia sacra) is the original sacred resin — burned in temples across Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean for at least 5,000 years. It is the most widely used ceremonial incense in human history, present in Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, and Indigenous African practice alike. When burned, it produces a warm, complex, slightly balsamic smoke that is immediately recognizable and deeply calming.

Our frankincense is raw resin tears, hand-harvested from wild Boswellia trees in Oman and Somalia. The trees are tapped by scoring the bark; the resin seeps out and hardens into translucent amber-gold tears over several weeks. Wild-harvested, unprocessed resin burns cleaner and produces a more complex aroma than powdered or compounded frankincense products.

Active Compounds

Frankincense contains boswellic acids — studied for anti-inflammatory effects — as well as volatile terpenes (α-pinene, limonene, incensole acetate) that contribute to its anxiolytic and mood-lifting properties when inhaled.

How to Burn Frankincense

  • Charcoal tablet method (recommended): Light a self-igniting charcoal tablet, wait until grey ash covers the surface (30–60 seconds), then place 1–3 resin tears on top. Resin melts slowly and releases smoke for 10–20 minutes per piece.
  • Oil burner: Add water and 1–2 small tears to the dish above a tea light — slower release, gentler aroma.
  • Traditional method: Hold a tear briefly in a flame until it begins to smoke, then blow out. Used in informal daily practice.
