How to Choose Hapé Strength: Gentle, Medium & Strong Explained
Share
One of the most common questions we receive from people new to Hapé is simple: How strong should I go?
It's the right question to ask. Hapé is not a one-size-fits-all medicine. The same amount of a strong blend that produces profound clarity in an experienced practitioner can be genuinely overwhelming for someone in their first sessions. Choosing the right strength at the right stage of your practice is one of the most important decisions you'll make.
This guide breaks down the three main categories of Hapé strength — soft/gentle, medium, and strong/high strength — explaining what each feels like, who it's for, which blends fall into each category, and how to know when you're ready to move up.

Hapé strength is determined by several factors working together: the potency of the Nicotiana rustica tobacco used, the type and quantity of ash blended in, the concentration of additional medicinal plants, and the grind fineness. A soft blend and a strong blend can look almost identical as a powder — but the experience they produce is completely different.
Strength in Hapé is not linear. It doesn't simply go from mild to intense. Different strengths work on different dimensions of the body and energy field. A soft blend might open the heart. A medium blend might clear the mind. A strong blend might purge the body. Understanding these distinctions helps you choose what you actually need — not just what you think sounds impressive.
Gentle / Soft Hapé — Where to Begin
What It Feels Like
Soft blends produce a mild, warm sensation in the sinuses — noticeable but not intense. The physical experience is manageable even for complete beginners. What follows is a gentle grounding: a subtle quieting of mental noise, a slight warmth in the chest, and a sense of soft presence. There is usually little to no purging.
Many people are surprised by how effective a gentle blend can be. You don't need intensity to receive medicine. Some of the most sustained and integrable shifts come from soft blends used with clear intention.
Who It's For
- Complete beginners in their first 1–5 sessions
- People with nicotine sensitivity
- Daily or near-daily practitioners who want a subtle reset without intensity
- Heart-opening and emotional processing work
- Meditation enhancement without strong physical effect
Recommended Blends
- Kuntanawa Copaiba — Copaiba resin adds anti-inflammatory properties and a distinctive warming quality. One of the softest and most forgiving blends we carry. Ideal first Hapé.
- Kuntanawa Menta — A refreshing, cooling blend with mint. Light in effect, clean in the sinuses, great for morning practice.
- Samauma Flower (various tribes) — The cotton tree flower adds a heart-opening quality that makes this blend feel expansive and emotionally accessible. Good for grief work, relationship intentions, or opening ceremonies.

What It Feels Like
Medium blends are where most regular practitioners live. The physical sensation is real and noticeable — a stronger pressure in the sinuses, more significant mucus release, possible tears — but the experience remains workable and doesn't require extended recovery time. The mental clarity that follows is sharp and sustained. Grounding is immediate and complete.
Most people reach medium strength after 3–10 sessions with softer blends, when they're familiar with the rhythm of application and recovery and want to go deeper without stepping into the intensity of strong medicines.
Who It's For
- Practitioners with 3+ sessions of experience
- Regular weekly or bi-weekly practice
- Pre-meditation or ceremony preparation
- Mental clarity and focus work
- Emotional processing with more significant release
- Energy clearing that goes beyond surface-level
Recommended Blends
- Caboclo Paricá — Our most consistent best-seller. Smooth, reliable, and deeply grounding. Made by Caboclo communities on the banks of the Purus River in Acre, Brazil. A benchmark medium blend.
- Kuntanawa Samauma — The full Samauma flower blend at medium intensity. More heart-opening than the pure tobacco blends, with a warm, emotionally resonant quality.
- Huni Kuin Tsunu — A clean, classic blend using Tsunu tree ash from one of the original Hapé-keeping tribes. Straightforward and powerful. No frills — just medicine.
- Yawanawá Tsunu — Tsunu-based from the Yawanawá people, carrying the particular energetic signature of their deep forest homeland. Slightly more expansive and uplifting than the Huni Kuin version.
Strong / High Strength Hapé — Deep Work
What It Feels Like
Strong blends are a different category of experience. The physical intensity is significant — sharp pressure in the sinuses, strong purging response (nausea, tears, and sometimes vomiting), and a wave of grounding that can feel overwhelming if you're not prepared for it. The mind goes very quiet very fast. The energy body responds powerfully.
In indigenous ceremony, this level of intensity is considered the medicine working at its most complete — purging what doesn't belong, clearing what has accumulated, resetting what has become stuck. Experienced practitioners often prefer strong blends precisely because of this depth. But that depth demands respect and preparation.
Who It's For
- Experienced practitioners with an established Hapé practice
- Deep ceremonial or healing work
- Physical purging and full-body reset
- Breaking through significant energetic blockages
- Working with experienced facilitators in a held space
- Not recommended as a first experience — ever.

How to Know When You're Ready to Move Up
There's no fixed number of sessions that qualifies you to step up in strength. But there are clear signs that you're ready:
- You feel comfortable with the application process and don't tense up in anticipation
- You can stay present and breathe through the intensity of your current blend without resistance
- Your current blend no longer produces noticeable effect — the medicine feels familiar rather than alive
- You have a clear intention for what you want the stronger medicine to help you with
- You're in a stable set and setting — not in a period of high stress, grief, or instability
Moving up in strength is not about proving something. It's about responding to what your practice actually needs. Some people stay with medium blends for years and have a deeply rich practice. Others move to strong medicine within a few months. Neither path is better.
A Note on Specialty and Rare Blends
Beyond the three main strength categories, we also carry a Speciality Hapé collection — small-batch, rare, and limited-quantity blends that arrive periodically from our tribal partners. These often sit outside the standard strength spectrum, combining unusual plant combinations or coming from less commonly available tribes. Check back regularly as these sell out and don't always return.
