White Sage Bundle | Origin: New Mexico
White Sage (Salvia apiana) is the sacred smudging herb of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Southwest — the Cahuilla, Chumash, Kumeyaay, and other nations of what is now California and New Mexico — where it grows wild in the coastal sage scrub ecosystem. For these communities, white sage smoke is a living spiritual tool, used to purify people, objects, and spaces before ceremony, prayer, healing, and rites of passage.
Our white sage bundles are hand-harvested from New Mexico, in the traditional manner — cut respectfully, leaving the root system intact for regrowth, and dried slowly in the sun. Each bundle is hand-tied with cotton cord. The aromatic compounds are preserved through careful drying, so the bundle smokes cleanly and fully when lit.
How to Smudge with White Sage
- Open windows or a door to give negative energy a way out of the space
- Light the tip of the bundle and let it burn for 30–60 seconds, then blow out the flame — the bundle should smoulder and smoke, not burn actively
- Hold a fireproof dish (abalone shell, ceramic bowl) beneath the bundle to catch ash
- Walk clockwise through the space, directing smoke with your hand or a feather into corners, doorways, windowsills, and closets
- Set an intention as you move — what you are clearing, and what you are welcoming
- Extinguish by pressing the lit end firmly into sand or soil
Personal Smudging
To clear your own energy: light the bundle, then draw the smoke toward your body starting from your feet and moving upward, paying attention to the hands, face, and top of the head. Many practitioners set a specific intention before beginning.
